Pico toning and laser toning are mutual complementary, synergistic effect through combination treatments
Many advantages of pico-second laser with a wavelength of 755nm

There is a wide range of aesthetic treatments available among clinics. Despite showing similar clinical outcomes, they may be divided into one or two depending on medical devices, products, or procedures that are being used. “You can see as much as you know!” We will look into some confused treatments which are representing medical aesthetic treatments. Following ‘Laser toning’ and ‘IPL’ previously discussed, this time we will discuss about ‘Pico toning’. The first interviewee is Dr. Young Woon Park, the founder of Villa De Skin.

Dr. Young Woon Park explained that pico toning and laser toning are mutual complementary.

We need to know about nano second laser and pico second laser to understand pico toning.

Nano second lasers have been commonly used in medical aesthetic field and the representative lasers are Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Laser toning is a treatment that makes skin tone evenly and we call it, ‘Laser toning’.

A nano second laser takes one billionth of a second to irradiate the laser once, and the pico second laser was developed by shortening the laser irradiation time, it takes one trillionth of a second. Pico toning is a treatment that uses this pico laser to even out the skin tone. It is a treatment that irradiates dark pigmented lesions with a pico laser to break pigment particles to match the tone of the surrounding skin.

In fact, from the patient’s point of view, it is not easy to distinguish the difference between pico toning and laser toning. The only difference is the laser used, but the concept of treatment is the same. Thus, some people think pico toning as an upgrade concept of laser toning, but it is better to think that they are different treatments using different conceptive devices.

Pico toning and laser toning are mutual complementary to each other in medical aesthetic clinic. A pico laser emits a laser beam for a shorter period of time than the Q-switched laser used for laser toning and can selectively destroy only the desired lesion without damaging the surrounding normal tissue. In a short moment, a strong laser beam comes out and splits the pigment particles into smaller pieces. So, it would be more effective to combine with laser toning. It is mainly used to treat pigmentation lesions such as melasma, freckles and to remove tattoos, and it can even improve scars, pores, fine wrinkles, and skin tone by activating collagen regeneration, that is, anti-aging effects.

Dr. Young Woon Park said, “A wavelength of 755 nm has many advantages for pico toning.”

Pico lasers are largely divided into 1064nm/532nm Nd:YAG lasers and 755nm Alexadrite lasers. Each wavelength has own characteristics. Dr. Young Woon Park, a founder of Villa De Skin, uses Cynosure’s 755nm alexandrite pico laser, ‘PicoSure.’

Dr. Park said, “Usually doctors try a demonstration for 1 or 2 weeks before they decide to purchase a new laser device, but it is difficult to confirm the effect during the demonstration period in weakly repeated treatment such as toning. However, PicoSure was demonstrated for a week, and the lesions that could not been treated before were treated well. For pore tightening, the 755nm wavelength has advantages. It improves pores without redness or causing bruising, scarring, or oozing on the skin. Also, it seems to be excellent for scar treatment.”

He continued, “I can see some cases that pimple may occur after pico toning with other wavelengths even though it is temporary, but after toning at 755nm wavelength, pimple do not seem to occur much. Patients decide to get toning in the hope that there will be no abnormalities on their skin, but if there are a lot of pimples, it can be stressful for the patients,” He emphasized the advantages of 755nm wavelength again.
